Building a Legal 40K Army by Points

Every game of matched play Warhammer 40,000 starts with a number: your points limit. Building to that limit is a balancing act between elite units that hit hard and cheaper bodies that hold objectives. This calculator tracks every unit and upgrade against your target so you never show up with an illegal list or waste the points that could have bought one more squad.

How this calculator works

Pick your faction and points limit, then add units. The tool sums their costs, tracks your remaining points, and flags when you go over. It uses current 10th edition values so your list stays tournament-legal.

How 40K points work

In 10th edition, each unit has a points cost tied to its size, and army-wide upgrades called Enhancements cost extra points with a limit per detachment. Standard game sizes are 1000 points for a smaller Incursion game and 2000 points for a full Strike Force. Points values are updated periodically, so building against the current numbers matters if you play in events.

Worked example

Suppose you are assembling a 2000-point army.

How to use it

  1. Select your faction and set the points limit for your game.
  2. Add each unit at the size you intend to field.
  3. Include characters and Enhancements, watching the per-detachment limit.
  4. Aim to spend as close to the cap as possible without going over.

How to use it

Pick your faction from the dropdown to filter available units, then choose a battle size: 500, 1000, 1500, 2000, 2500, or 3000 points. Add units and the tool updates unit count, model count, and points total in real time. Select a warlord trait and army enhancement to complete your build. Use Export to save the list or Clear All to start over.
